Over the last 10 years there have been improvements in a number of air quality indicators. The increasing proportion of vehicles meeting tighter emission standards has played a major part in these air quality improvements.
Australia has had car and truck pollution emission standards for new vehicles in place since the early 1970’s. These have been progressively tightened in response to global concerns around pollution and emissions. Australia currently bases its standards on Euro 5. Presumably this will tighten to Euro 6 in the near future. In fact, the Australian Government’s Ministerial Forum on Vehicle Emissions is currently undertaking a review to consider whether Australia should adopt the Euro 6 standards for light and heavy vehicles.
EURO 6 is the European standard for reducing pollutant emissions of light passenger and commercial vehicles. From September 2015 these standards were mandatory for any vehicle.
EURO 6 loos to curtail dangerous nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. These are the ones which can seriously affect your breathing. Moreover road viechles are a leading producer of these emissions.
